Dunedin Biorepository
Research that is done at Otago University is world class. The Dunedin study (which has been going for nearly 40 years) has followed 1037 babies born in Dunedin, New Zealand between 1 April 1972 and 31 March 1973 at the Queen Mary Maternity Hospital. These studies provide unprecedented and ground-breaking information that influence family, child and public health policies overseas and in New Zealand.
This is Dee Yang she is responsible for the management, maintenance and security of the Dunedin Study Biorepository during the age 38 assessment phase. She has been studying and working in New Zealand for seven years, since commencing her studies for her BSc in biochemistry at the University of Otago in 2003.
Charity
Cheerfulness is a very great help in fostering the virtue of charity. Cheerfulness itself is a virtue.
Before you print.
Don’t trust your monitor? Before printing, find out what your photoshop file is really made up of.
The eye-dropper tool and info menu will tell you exactly what your file consists of. Printers will print the information that is in your file, not what you see on your monitor.
ie: if the file has high values of yellow in the mid-tones and highlights, the print will have a yellow cast.
So you can adjust them before you send your image off to the lab for printing.
Resizing vs Resampling
Hi Guys, here is a quick heads-up on Re-sizing (for print) vs Re-sampling in Photoshop.
When changing the size of an image in Photoshop, there’s really two ways to go about it. You can either resize the image, or you can resample it.
A lot of people use the terms resizing and resampling as if they mean the same thing, but they don’t, and there’s an important difference between the two.
Hoiho cries for help.
We are blessed to have Yellow-Eyed (Hoiho) Penguins breeding close to our photographic studio here in Dunedin, New Zealand.
One of my long term dreams is that these areas are protected for our children and future generations. With Deep Sea Oil exploration looking like a possibility for New Zealand, I am fearful that our sensitive eco-system could be disrupted or even destroyed!
The NZ government has just said yes to Oil giants to start looking for oil in the Canterbury Basin. Wake-up New Zealand! With more airtime given to Rugby World Cup fever here in New Zealand at the moment, important issues that are happening right now are swept under the perverbial advertising carpet.
New Zealanders, put that beer down, turn the television off and open your eyes!!!
Please educate yourself New Zealanders! Don’t let this happen in Aotearoa. Get involved and protest. Here is a recent rally in Dunedin. You can find “Save Otakou from Oil Drilling” on Facebook… Also see Stop Deep Sea Oil.
New eyes
Take time to watch, when you are out with your camera. This guy was watching me as I photographed other people with my Strobe (off camera lighting, my flash was strapped to the inside of a shoot-thru umbrella).
As a photographer I often feel an outsider looking in. If you get too close you can lose sight of what makes life different. But… this image is more about similarities in life, rather than differences. I’m glad I made this image, as it reminds me to just watch & not to get too involved when photographing people.
I love to shoot film.
“Film is not dead, it just smells funny”. Although I mainly shoot with Nikon Digital SLRs, I have different film cameras that I love to shoot with too. I believe this gives a different quality to the images. It can take a little longer to process and scan, but well worth the extra effort.
This image of Leigh & Sunshine was shot on a Medium Format camera, with 6×6 colour slide film. You can see this camera here on Flickr.

Leigh & Sunshine
I had the privilege to photograph Leigh and Sunshine’s wedding, right here in Dunedin on the Otago Peninsula. There are so many dramatic locations to get that perfect work of art of your wedding day. As a landscape photographer, I know what makes and awesome location to shoot at.
