Ground Breaking Eye Surgery

Posted on August 15, 2011

Great to be asked to photograph this amazing Team at The Southern DHB. They are now offering patients ground breaking vitreoretinal surgery, which as well as improving a patient’s vision can reduce a patient’s time in theatre.

This state of the art vitrectomy machine features the latest cataract surgery technology within one unit. This means they have the ability to treat someone who needs both retinal surgery (back of the eye) and cataract surgery in the same procedure. Previously patients would have undergone two separate operations and have to be transfered to Christchurch.

From left: Chief Operating Officer (Otago) Vivian Blake and Ultra VR surgical team members Rob Jones (Registrar), Registered Nurses Tina Shaw, Mairi Hannah, Jenny King, and Andrew Thompson (Consultant). The team are pictured with the Alcon Constellation – a state of the art machine for vitrectomy and cataract surgery.
