PORTRAIT: IAN BREATHERTON

One of the things I most appreciate about certain people is their passion for what they do. Whether it’s art or how they relate to nature, that passion is obvious with Ian.

Ian is an artist, sculptor, sailor, photographer, surfer, historian, teacher, collector of interesting things, but his love of music is evident the moment you spend some time with him. He is one of those rare people that can introduce you to a new band (without you even noticing) and you can’t help but to buy their album.

And here’s the thing. Ian is REALLY, REALLY NICE. Like cool nice.

I should have added “Wayfarer” to his resume because a few years ago he sailed the Pacific Ocean on the Haunui. A traditional twin-hulled voyaging Waka, only using traditional Polynesian navigation techniques. Yeah that’s right- that’s using the sun, stars, wind, waves, clouds and wildlife!

After writing this, I have realised that these words and this portrait don’t really do the man justice, it’s more of a spontaneous grab shot on our way out for coffee.

Thanks for all the coffee man.
