DISPATCHES: MATARIKI FEAST

A feast to remember and celebrate Matariki (mid-winter) at our local Dunedin Primary school Andersons Bay. Experiencing a hangi is a great way to interact with local Māori culture, as it is not only a cultural means of cooking food but also a social occasion to share food and good company with friends and family.

The earth is the giver of all life, from the soil, came food and that same food was cooked beneath the earth.

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many, it heralds the start of a new year.
